The waterman marionette was made around 1930 by the Czech puppeteer and woodcarver František Šimek.
In the case of the sale of this puppet, we dedicate half of the amount collected to the development of PUP - Puppet University Prague
This extraordinary, unique piece of history has found its way into our collection. This puppet has a movable jaw, webs between the fingers and pink cheeks. It is made of linden wood and its jacket is as high quality as if it was sewn for a person. With its original wooden hairstyle and beard, it will stand out anywhere. All materials (wood, textiles, metal) that were used to make this marionette are original.
František Šimek (1881-1949) learned the carving craft from his father. He created heads and whole marionettes either alone or with other Czech puppeteers. He also renovated marionettes for other puppeteers. The costumes were made by his wife. In addition to marionettes, he also made daily necessities and furniture and restored wooden sculptures in churches.
My 17 year old daughter absolutely adores Annie! As she said, “Shes not just a doll—shes a work of art!” This is an exquisite marionette. Obviously made with great artistry and attention to detail. Beyond lovely!
